I used to be a nanny. I had been babysitting since my early teens and when I was 19 I decided to become a nanny. I had always loved children, the money was better than minimum wage and I’d much rather play with blocks and change diapers than blend smoothies or suck up to customers at a boring retail job.My first nanny job was taking care of a 2.5 year old and then helping out with her newborn brother when he was born a few weeks after I started. Some days I was sleepy and the hours of sitting on the floor playing with a 2 year old got mind numbing, but overall I loved it. I went on to nanny for more families after that and continued to love it. Especially the babies and toddlers. My favorite ages are like 3 months through 3 years old. There’s nothing like a 1 year old stumbling/running at you for a hug.
I recently reconnected with the mother of the kids mentioned above through facebook. They’re now 8 and 5 1/2. Whaaaat? Really? I was looking through her pictures and realized I missed them. I miss being around children way more than I thought I would. So I did the logical thing…
I put an ad on craigslist. Sounds totally creepy, but I found a lot of legitimate jobs this way. I work from home and my schedule is flexible, so I totally have the free time to be a nanny. As of right now, no bites in my little town of a lot of stay at home moms and people who can’t afford a nanny.
Also, I didn’t actually title it “Former Nanny Seeks Children to Snuggle”. Do you think that would get me more replies? Because I’ll totally change it if it will put me on the fast track to changing diapers and warm, cuddly babies who just woke up from a nap.
Care.com. Create a profile there. You’ll probably find something.
I second what Fenn said! That’s how I got my current babysitting job!
Thanks guys! I’m actually already on there and sittercity and a few others. I think it’s just a matter of my town having maybe 10,000 people total and at least half are older retirees with no kids.
